(This is a computer translation of the original article in Spanish. It should not be regarded as complete or accurate.)
Benedetta Carlini was born in 1590, in Tuscany (Italy). She is known as "the lesbian nun". Of well-off family, she entered a convent at the age of nine. At the age of 23 she started having visions of Virgin Mary and of angels guards. Sister Benedetta was elected an abbess of the Convent of the God's Mother seven years later because of those visions, but later she raised suspicions because she was affirming to have direct contact with Christ. During the investigation, the authorities of the Inquisition determined that she had lied about her visions and stigmas, and also they discovered evidences of which Sister Benedetta had supported lesbian relations with another nun, Bartolomea, and forced to other nuns to support relations several times a week, for what she was condemned to 35 years of prison (a small sorrow for the epoch, because she was considered that she had been cheated by the devil). In the "Agreement of chronic illnesses" of Soranos is commented: "Acting as if she was a man, she [Sister Benedetta] was moving on the subordinate with such an intensity that both were remaining corrupt". The historian Judith C. Brown, in 1980, extracted to the light the case of the Sister Benedetta, the first one of lesbianism documented in Occident.
